What's Next
Hiring a licensed private investigator is common and generally legal in Singapore for gathering evidence in matrimonial cases (e.g., proving adultery or unreasonable behaviour under the Women’s Charter for divorce). Evidence from a licensed PI (private investigator) is often admissible in Family Court if obtained legally. However, costs can be high (typically SGD 100–300 per hour, or a few thousand dollars for a case), and the process can be emotionally taxing. But, we’re here to help you find the truth when you’re ready. Proceeding with a professional investigation often brings the clarity needed to make informed decisions about your future — and we’ll be with you throughout the process.
1
Stay discreet and document suspicions quietly.
Note unusual patterns (late nights, changed routines, phone secrecy, unexplained expenses, mileage, etc.) without confronting your spouse or doing anything illegal yourself (e.g., no hacking, trespassing, or hidden cameras in private spaces that could violate privacy laws or the Personal Data Protection Act). Confronting the spouse at this point could make gathering evidence more difficult.
2
Verify legitimacy and credentials
- Confirm that the agency holds a valid Private Investigation Agency (PIA) Licence
- Confirm that individual private investigators (PI) have personal PI Licences (only awarded to Singapore citizens who have passed WSQ training on legal compliance & have a clean record)
3
Speak to a senior private investigator (PI) or an agency’s key appointment holder.
and not to any private investigator (PI) representing themselves. Individual PIs are not allowed to market PI services or act on his own behalf but they have to work under a PIA. (Our friendly senior PI or director will meet you for a free consultation).
Key questions to ask the PIA:
- How many matrimonial/infidelity cases have you handled?
- What legal methods do you use (surveillance, background checks, etc.)?
- How do you ensure evidence is court-admissible and compliant with PDPA/privacy laws?
- What’s the estimated cost, retainer, and timeline?
- Will the investigator provide an affidavit or testify if needed for court?
Important legal notes in Singapore:
- Private Investigators cannot break the law (no illegal recording, hacking, trespass, or unreasonable intrusion). Illegal evidence risks being inadmissible and may expose you to countersuits or prosecution.
- In divorce, PI reports can support “adultery” or “unreasonable behaviour” grounds and may influence asset division or custody. Ask for the costs of these additional charges.
What You Are Supposed to Do (Your Role)
Before investigation:
- Maintain normal behaviour at home.
- Gather basic info (partner’s schedule, vehicle details, recent photos, work habits, suspected locations).
- Consult a lawyer, therapist and private investigation agency discreetly.
During investigation:
- Provide updates on schedule changes without tipping off your partner.
- Keep everything 100% confidential- tell no one unless those who can give you good moral support and care.
- Do not conduct your own surveillance.
After investigation:
- Review the report with the PIA & lawyer. Decide on confrontation, separation, counselling, or filing for divorce. Prioritise your mental health.
